Tips for Reading Barcodes
Every single product comes with a barcode that is usually read by a scanner. But you can also read the barcode manually. You do not actually need a scanner to interpret it but of course scanner makes everything faster. In order to read the barcodes efficiently, you should be able to understand it structure first.
The quiet zone refers to the margins around the barcode symbols. The margins are expected to be wide enough for the scanner to read it effectively. Each margin should at least be ten times wider than the narrowest bar width.
Different characters can be seen in various barcodes. Common characters are letters, asterisks, and the like.
The pattern of black bars and white spaces constitute the data which can vary in shape and size. Four different types widths are incorporated in a barcode.
The check digit is a number found on the end of the data before the stop character. Essentially, it double checks for any printing errors that may have happened when the barcode was being created.
Barcode reading starts with the most common barcode that are 12 digit UPC. There are certain barcodes that have numbers printed below it while some do not have it. We are helping you decode the 12 digit number that each barcode has. Firstly, look for the sets of long lines that goes all the way down past all of the others and there should be three sets made up of two lines each. The lines break up the data into two sets called the left and right so these lines are not the ones being read by the scanner. Secondly, be certain that you can determine the various bar and space widths. For now, we’ll refer to these as numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 in order of smallest to largest. For the left part of the data, locate the first space and assign its size. Do this step to all bars and spaces until you reach the center lines. Group these sets into four with the alternate pattern of white and black. Begin with the first black bar on the right part. The pattern is completely reversed but still in four.
You should have two sets of six numbers. A single digit is assigned to these sets. You can easily look for the corresponding values in the internet to learn more here.
